Previously, he was legal advisor to various companies and represented Spain before the European Court of Justice on more than 60 occasions. He was also legal advisor to the Spanish government during the negotiations for the Treaty on European Union (Treaty of Maastricht 1992-1993). In 1993, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs named him Jeune leader européen.
Now focusing on international arbitration, he participates in ad hoc and institutional arbitrations. A Spanish representative before the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the ICC´s Arbitration Committee, he is also a member of the board of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA). He is a frequent arbitrator at the ICC, LCIA, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and the main Spanish and Latin American arbitration courts.
Mr. Hierro is president of the Spanish Arbitration Club, an association comprising over 500 international arbitration experts from around the world. He is also vice president of the Spanish section of the International Law Association.
A lecturer at the Instituto de Empresa, he also lectures regularly on his specialty areas, and was made an honorary lecturer of the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola in Lima in 2007.
Mr. Hierro is the author of several legal works and publications. His most recent include El Anuario Contencioso y de Arbitraje (Litigation and Arbitration Yearbook), Wolters Kluwer-La Ley, editions 2009, 2010 and 2011), and the collective work El Arbitraje Comercial Internacional en Iberoamérica (International Commercial Arbitration in Latin America, Wolters Kluwer, 2009), both of which he was editor-in-chief.
He is a member of the editorial boards of several publications, such as the Tribuna del Derecho (Law Tribune) and Spain Arbitration Review.
In the business area, he is the sole director, vice president and/or board member of various companies in diverse sectors including real estate and construction, hotels and restaurants, renewable energy production and the telecommunications distribution market.
