José de Freitas - Partner Cuatrecasas

José de Freitas is a partner of Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira & Associados, Sociedade de Advogados, SP, RL, since 1990, having founded the firm’s Porto office in 1989. 

He heads the Corporate and Litigation Practices. 

Recommended by several directories, including Chambers Europe and Legal 500 in the categories "General business law: Porto" and “Reestructuring and Insolvency.”

José de Freitas was admitted to the Portuguese Bar Association in 1980. He served as a member of its General Board from 2005 to 2007 and is a member of its National Committee for Internship and Training (CNEF) since 2017. 

He took up office as President of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) on January 1 2019, having been Vice-President from 2016 to 2018. He is also Chair of the CCBE Brexit Task Force since January 2018. He is member of the Supervisory Board of the European Lawyers Foundation (ELF) since January 2018, and served as Head of the Portuguese Delegation to the CCBE from 2005 to 2015, and as Chair of the CCBE’s Professional Indemnity Working Group from 2007 to 2013. 

He is member of the International Bar Association (IBA), the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA). 

He is a visiting professor at the School of Law of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa do Porto.
