Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira has, for the fourth consecutive year, organized the Spanish round of the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, a moot competition on international public law

Having won the Spanish round of the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, the team from the Autonomous University of Madrid will participate in the final in Washington D.C. in April 2014.

Participating in this year’s national rounds were a total of 28 students from ESADE, the Autonomous University of Madrid, Carlos III University, the University of Navarra, Rey Juan Carlos University and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

This year’s case involved two fictitious states and their claims to the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the use and conservation of maritime natural resources, the conflicting jurisdiction of the states in relation to maritime salvage rights, and the criminal jurisdiction of the courts of one state to try a citizen from another state.

The students’ oral and written pleadings were assessed by a panel of over 55 experts comprising lawyers, judges and academics from Spain and abroad.

According to Berta González, the competition’s national administrator and associate of Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, “the participants’ efforts are admirable, given that they have to juggle their academic lives with the preparation of a complex case, while also showing excellent skills in oral and written legal English.”

Núria Rexach, head of recruitment at Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, said that “the Jessup Moot Court has become established in Spain, and a clear example of that is the quality of the students participating in the competition. For us, as a law firm, it is a great opportunity to attract talent and offer students the ideal setting for developing skills they will require as the lawyers of the future.”
