Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira recruits state counsel José Argüelles as a partner


The new partner, who will be based at the firm’s Palma de Mallorca office, is a member of the Advisory Board of the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands and has held the post of chief state counsel for the Balearic Islands.

Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira strengthens its Palma de Mallorca office by appointing Mr. José Argüelles as a partner. A highly regarded state counsel, he developed most of his career in the Balearic Islands, and is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands. Between 2000 and 2007, he was chief state counsel for the Balearic Islands, and after that, director of legal affairs of the Association of Property and Commercial Registrars of Spain.

With years of experience, Mr. Argüelles specializes in tax fraud, as well as commercial, insolvency, notary and registry law, and all areas of public law. According to Mr. Pedro San José, director of the Palma de Mallorca office: “the addition of a leading, highly regarded and versatile lawyer such as Mr. Argüelles will further strengthen the legal team in Palma, enabling us to improve the top-quality legal services we offer companies in the Balearic Islands.”

Mr. Argüelles has a Bachelor of Laws from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a Diploma in Business Studies from the National University for Distance Learning. He is a member of the Body of State Counsels since 1990, having obtained the second highest results of his year in the public competitive examinations. In addition to many years preparing students to sit the public competitive examinations to become members of the Body of State Counsels, he lectures in the Master in Inland Revenue at the Universidad de las Illes Balears.  He also recently lectured in the “Expert Course in Insolvency Law” organized by the Universidad Europea de Madrid and directed at graduates of commercial law and business studies in the Balearic Islands.
