  • The Corporate Practice generates the highest growth due to the increase in corporate transactions in 2015
  • International billing represents 20% of the firm’s total business

Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, a leading law firm in Spain and Portugal advising listed companies in both countries, has achieved strong financial results driven mostly by the performance of its Corporate Practice, which once again leads the ranking of law firms by number of transactions.

The year’s billing exceeded €265 million (€265.7 million) compared to the €255 million billed the previous year. The firm has grown by 4.03% and consolidated its sustained growth over six consecutive years. Of this figure, 20% comes from the international market.

The Corporate Practice has contributed the largest sales volume with 36.5% of overall billing, followed closely by the Tax Practice, responsible for 32.7%, and the Litigation Practice and Labor and Employment Practice with 21.9% and 8.9%, respectively.

The firm’s president, Rafael Fontana, stated, “The economic growth in 2015 enabled our Corporate Practice to keep growing, advising Spanish and foreign investors on a significant number of financial and corporate transactions.”

Awards and main transactions

The 2015 edition of the prestigious FT Innovative Lawyers award recognized Cuatrecasas as the most innovative firm of the year in corporate practice and the fourth in the general ranking of continental Europe. Best Lawyers recommended 410 of the firm’s lawyers individually and, for another year running, Cuatrecasas leads the Iberian market by volume of M&A transactions, according to Mergermarket and Thomson Reuters rankings.

The firm has advised on large corporate transactions, including the sale of Eolia Renovables, the sale of Finerge by Enel Green Power, and the privatization of Portuguese airline TAP. It has also been active in booming sectors such as real estate, energy and financial services.

International expansion

International billing volume represents 20% overall, and the firm is increasingly attracting business from outside Spain. In 2015, inbound business increased by 5%, with the United Kingdom, Germany and France as the jurisdictions generating the most business.

Europe is still a strategic market, where Cuatrecasas has taken significant steps to enhance its relationship with the network of European firms, together with Gide in France, Chiomenti in Italy and Gleiss Lutz in Germany. Last November, the four firms decided to combine their experience and knowledge to establish a joint hub in Frankfurt focused on regulatory issues.

Moreover, these firms share offices in Brussels, London, Morocco and Shanghai. The network partners work closely together on a large number of crossborder transactions where clients benefit from the exchange of experience and skills.

The firm continues to expand in Latin America by establishing its own offices and working with leading independent firms in different jurisdictions. Besides its Sao Paulo office, Cuatrecasas now has one in México, where the firm is growing, particularly in the energy and infrastructure industries.

In other jurisdictions, the firm is still developing relationships with the best firms, particularly in the Pacific Alliance. This flexible strategy has granted Cuatrecasas a privileged position of independence when attracting business in the increasing flow of investments and transactions carried out by Latin American companies and groups.

Finally, in Asia, we highlight the excellent performance of our China Desk and our office in Shanghai. The firm is preparing the final paperwork to open its new office in Beijing, which it expects to complete in 2016.

Responsible business committed to people

In 2015, the firm published its first corporate report,, following the G4 standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and including the principles of Integrated Reporting (IR). In 2002, Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira committed to the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, and it aims to turn the practice of law into a transformational springboard for its clients, its team and its area of influence.

Outlook for 2016

In economic terms, the firm expects to maintain certain levels of recovery, particularly in M&A. In this context, it has set its expansion objective at 5% for 2016. In terms of its team, it expects to bring 100 new lawyers on board in all practice areas in 2016.

Building work on the firm’s new headquarters in the 22@ district in Barcelona is progressing well; the two towers are finished and have become part of the city’s skyline. The interior fitting-out is under way to meet the completion deadline at the end of 2016. The new headquarters will be ready to be inaugurated in 2017, when the firm will celebrate its first 100 years.
