  • José de Freitas is the third Portuguese lawyer in the history of the CCBE to take up office as president.

José de Freitas, partner of Cuatrecasas since 1990 and founder of the firm’s Porto office, was elected president of the Council of European Bar Associations (CCBE) - the representative body of almost one million European lawyers through the National Bar Associations.

José de Freitas was vice president of this organization in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and will take up office as president on January 1, for a one-year mandate, succeeding Antonín Mokry, from the Czech Republic. Ranko Pélicaric, from Croatia, Margarete von Gallen, from Germany, and James Macguill, from Ireland, were elected vice-presidents.

Delegations from 32 countries voted and the results were announced on November 29 in a plenary session in Lille, France.

About CCBE

Based in Brussels, the CCBE was founded in 1960 to bring together and represent the interests of the Bar Associations of the European Economic Area Member States. It includes 32 full member States and 13 associated and observer States. The CCBE is at the forefront of making the opinions of European lawyers known and defend the fundamental values of the practice of law, the legal principles of democracy and the rule of law. The CCBE is recognized as the voice of European lawyers by the Bar Associations and the European institutions, namely the European Commission and the European Parliament. In addition, the CCBE works closely with non-European lawyer organizations.
