The renewable energy sector analyzes its future and its international scope

The minister for industry, energy and tourism has confirmed that the government aims to increase and strengthen the inclusion of renewable sources in the mix of energies used to generate electricity

 

The state secretary for the environment highlighted the need for the energy sector to collaborate, to help combat climate change

 

International experts emphasized Spain’s leadership as a source of natural resources and its leading role in international spheres, both in Europe and America, as well as in the new emerging markets

 

The renewable energy sector analyzed ways to end the electricity tariff deficit, and ensure the sector’s future and its international scope at the Renewable energy forum: New horizons, organized by Kreab Gavin Anderson, Cuatrecasas Gonçalves Pereira and Livingstone.

 

José Manuel Soria, minister for industry, energy and tourism, inaugurated the forum and stated that the government aims to “increase and strengthen the inclusion of renewable energies in the mix of energies used to generate electricity.”

 

Mr. Soria also pointed out the possibility of implementing new additional measures to those established in the Draft Bill on Tax Measures relating to the Environment and Energy Sustainability if the imbalance in the electricity sector rises, causing the electricity tariff deficit to shoot up in 2012 and 2013. He also seemed to be willing to tackle the issue of the new electricity tax again if the sector’s imbalance could be rectified and the tariff deficit eliminated.

 

During the session, Federico Ramos de Armas, the state secretary for the environment, stressed the need for the energy sector to collaborate, to help combat climate change, stating “Any strategy chosen will require greater participation by renewable energies and improved energy efficiency.”

 

He explained that the government expects to collect €70 million this year through the so-called "early auctions" of CO2 emission rights, which start tomorrow. 

 

At the discussion session entitled “The energy reform and the future of renewable energies,” the spokespeople for the employers organizations UNEF, AEE, APPA and Protermosolar denounced the discriminatory nature of the Draft Bill on Tax Measures relating to the Environment and Energy Sustainability and highlighted the need to establish a solid legal framework granting visibility, and guaranteeing the security and the sustainability of the different energy sources in the future.

 

  

The EU’s 20-20-20 targets

 

At the session entitled EU 20/20/20, objectives and financing,” Marie Donnelly, director of renewable energies at the European Commission, stressed the need to promote convergence and cooperation between the Member States through an appropriate legal framework. She said that “With a single market in operation, we could better integrate renewable energies, promoting the support of convergence schemes and cost efficiency, and ensuring fair treatment.”

 

International experts from IFC-World Bank Group emphasized Spain’s leadership as a source of natural resources and the leading role of Spain’s renewable energy sector in international spheres, both in Europe and America, as well as in the new emerging markets of Asia and Africa.

 

Attending theRenewable energy forum: New horizons held today in Madrid and organized by Kreab Gavin Anderson, Cuatrecasas Gonçalves Pereira and Livingstonewere the sector’s main agents, employers organizations, and companies such as Enel Green Power, General Electric, Abengoa Solar, Acciona Energía, FRV and Iberdrola, as well as international experts from IFC-World Bank Group; the attendees reflected on the future and the regulation of renewable energies, and the challenges and opportunities to developing the industry in a new economic and social scenario.
