Universidad Carlos III de Madrid has won the sixth Spanish Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court competition, in a hard-fought tournament on international public law in which seven universities and business schools participated.

For the sixth consecutive year, the firm organized the competition's national rounds in its Barcelona office, in which law students simulate a legal dispute before the International Court of Justice, the United Nations highest judicial body.

After a year of intensive preparation, the teams debated the complex balance between national security and civil rights when combating terrorism, this year’s theme.

Over 30 judges comprising a group of partners from the firm, senior judges, university professors, and other experts, were tasked with assessing the students. Structuring ideas, managing rhetoric, and the ability to argue postures were some of the skills most valued by the judges.

Julia Signes, associate at the firm and the national administrator of the Jessup Moot Court, “highlighted the effort and fair play that the seven teams displayed in the competition.”

ESADE Business & Law School, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad de Navarra, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Universitat Pompeu Fabra participated in the Jessup Moot Court competition.

About Jessup Moot Court

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is an international public law competition with participants from over 550 law schools in more than 80 countries. It simulates a fictional dispute between countries over a current legal conflict before the International Court of Justice.

The International Law Students Association (ILSA) organizes the competition, in its 57th edition, the sixth in Spain. The winning teams from each participating country will face each other in the grand final, the White & Case Jessup Cup, which is held each spring in Washington D.C.
