The Spanish Securities and Exchange Commission reports that the percentage of women on the boards of listed companies reached 23.7% in 2019, a 3.8% increase on the 19.9% recorded in 2018.

On July 8, the Spanish Securities and Exchange Commission (CNMV) reported that the percentage of women on the boards of Spanish listed companies reached 23.7% in 2019, a 3.8% increase on the 19.9% recorded in 2018.

As in previous years, large cap companies accounted for the most significant progress towards the current recommended objective of 30%. Thus, in the companies comprising the Ibex-35, the percentage of female directors was 27.5% on average, almost 4% higher than 2018.

Despite this increase, this percentage is still far from the new objective set in the listed companies Good Governance Code. The recently amended Code of Good Governance states that the percentage of women on boards should reach 40% by the end of 2022.

By categories of directors, the presence of women among independent directors (36.9% in 2019 compared with 30.6% in 2018) continues to rise, followed by proprietary directors (17.3%). On the contrary, the small number of female executive directors is striking (5.5%).

In terms of senior management, female representation remains at 16%,as in the previous year (although this figure falls to 13.4% in listed companies with capitalization below 500 million euros). Boosting the increase in the number of female senior executives has been one of the cornerstones of the recent Code of Good Governance review to strengthen long-term gender diversity on the boards of listed companies.
