Andrew Ward recognized as one of the best young Competition lawyers in the world

April 2, 2012

Andrew Ward, partner in Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira’s Competition and EU Law Practice, has been included on the Global Competition Review (GCR) 40 under 40 list, which recognizes leading young lawyers in competition practice worldwide. He is the only lawyer practicing in Spain named on this prestigious list.

The 40 lawyers on the list have been selected from 1,000 candidates worldwide by experts in the sector. The same ranking describes these young lawyers as part of “the next leading generation in competition,” thanks to their “top-class technical and practical knowledge, together with their dedication to the sector.” “It is gratifying to be included in this ranking, bearing in mind the rest of the award-winning professionals in this and previous editions. In my opinion, all of them are really exceptional lawyers and it is an honor to share this distinction. In addition, to be highly regarded by so many colleagues in my area of specialization worldwide makes it even more special,” Andrew Ward explains.

According to Cani Fernández, coordinator of the Competition and EU Law Practice in Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, “the award confirms Andrew’s exceptional professional qualities and the solid position achieved by our practice not only in Spain, but also at international level.”

Mr. Ward, aged 38, specializes in Community and Spanish competition law. His experience in London, Brussels and Madrid has made him an expert in merger control, advising on investigations by competition authorities and managing this type of risk. He has been in Spain for 10 years and has been involved in some of the most significant cases in recent times, including Telefónica and Telecinco’s acquisition of minority stakes in Digital+, Mutua Madrileña’s acquisition of 50% of SegurCaixa Adeslas, and Cepsa’s acquisition of Chevron España. This year, he was appointed a member of the Spanish Competition Association.

This recognition adds to what Mr. Ward received in 2011, when Iberian Lawyer included him in the 40 best young lawyers in Spain and Portugal in all disciplines in Iberia.
