Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, the leading law firm in Spain and Portugal has launched an equestrian law practice to meet the sector’s need for expert legal services.

The sector is growing: according to Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation, in 2013, equestrian-related activities had a financial impact of more than €5.3 billion, or 0.5% of Spanish GDP. The Iberian firm has created this specialist team to offer its services to a prominent sector, which includes business, scientific and veterinary groups, and which generates significant wealth and enjoys international presence.

The equestrian law practice will cover all activities related to horse riding as a major sporting event, which combines show and competition. The sport attracts national and international spectators, and creates opportunities in marketing and publicity.

Multidisciplinary practice

Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira has a multidisciplinary team specialized in the equestrian sector, offering personalized advice to companies, horse riders, horse breeders, riding center owners, equine therapy centers and racetracks. Of the services the team will offer, we highlight advice on tax and intellectual property matters, image rights, sponsorship, and corporate and life sciences for sales transactions of show and race horses.

The team will also advise on financing, town planning and real estate for the development of sports centers.

The Iberian firm once again turns to innovation to develop its business. Partners, Francisco Cavero, in Spain, and Diogo Ortigão, in Portugal, lead this practice that falls under the scope of our Sports Group. Mr. Cavero noted that “innovation in law firms often depends on the client’s level of sophistication. The greater the challenge, the greater our ability to respond to it must be. Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira can apply its experience and knowledge in practically all areas of law to the equestrian sector, which offers clear potential for business development.”
