June 6, 2018

Around 500 participants attended the XXVIII International Federation of European Law (FIDE) Congress, held at the Estoril Congress Center on May 23-26, 2018. The meeting The Portuguese president and the prime minister led the opening and closing ceremonies, respectively.

Rita Leandro Vasconcelos, who is of counsel at Cuatrecasas specializing in European Law and Competition and also the General Secretary of the Governing Board of Portuguese European Law Association (APDE), was involved in the organization since 2016. During the congress, Rita Vasconcelos welcomed and introduced many of the most high profile speakers. Lourenço Vilhena de Freitas, partner, acted as one of the National Rapporteurs for Portugal and Filipa Pimentel, who is on APDE’s Executive Committee, have been directly involved in organizing this event, of which Cuatrecasas was also a sponsor.

The congress discussed major issues of European current affairs in terms of policy, legislation and jurisprudence. Parallel working group sessions covered topics such as the internal market and the digital economy; taxation, state aid and distortions of competition; and the external dimension of European Union policies (trade and investment, immigration and asylum).  There was also much debate about Brexit, including the point of view of the European Commission chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier.

FIDE congresses are large-scale forums for reflection and debate on European Union law. They are organized every two years in different EU member states by each national association of European law, which take it in turns to chair the FIDE. From May 2016 to May 2018 this honor fell on the APDE, of which many of our lawyers are members, and which is chaired by José Luís Cruz Vilaça, a Portuguese CJEU judge.
