Paulo Costa Martins and León López Iglesias awarded with "40 under 40" prize

​The lawyers Paulo Costa Martins (Lisbon) and León López Iglesias (Madrid) were awarded the prize “40 under 40”, at a ceremony held on Sept. 17 at the Pestana Palace Hotel in Lisbon. Assigned by the Iberian Lawyer magazine every two years, the awards recognize lawyers and legal directors of Iberia who are under 40 years of age, and who stand out for their performance at a professional level, their management experience and social responsibility. 

Paulo Costa Martins has been a lawyer in the Financial Law Department since 1999 and has been involved in many significant operations in this area in Portugal, including financing, establishing banks and financial companies, the structuring and establishment of alternative investment, the issuing of public and private stocks and shares, and the provision of regular advice to a large group of Portuguese and foreign financial entities in regulatory matters.  

For Maria João Ricou, a partner in the Lisbon office, "this award is a well-deserved recognition of the qualities that Paulo has demonstrated and developed throughout his time in the firm, starting with his stage in the Banking & Financial Department and Capital Markets, which he later joined. What stands out is his dedication and loyalty, his rigor, his increasing capacity and his ongoing effort to provide a high quality service with regard to all matters entrusted to him, this has enabled him to gain an excellent reputation in the markets, particularly in areas of regulatory and banking compliance, the management of assets and investment funds." 

León López Iglesias has been a lawyer in our firm since 2001 and has extensive experience in financing operations, such as restructuring and refinancing during pre-bankruptcy phases, advising financial institutions, venture capital entities and companies from various sectors, both domestic and foreign. He is the a Georgetown International Ambassador and member of the Georgetown Club in Spain since 2004, and did attended the “Leadership in Law Firms” program at Harvard Law School (Boston, USA).  

For Rafael Mínguez, a partner in the Madrid office, “this award recognizes a brilliant career following our career model. Leo began his career at the firm on a PPAI (International Advocacy Pro Program) joining the Mercantile team in Madrid Financial to pass through different areas and offices of the firm which, together with his international stays (in Toronto, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Washington and London) have given him a global vision, knowledge about different realities and people in the firm, internal visibility and the ability to understand the needs from multiple viewpoints. Leo is a person with an outstanding ability to work and put in effort and high levels of commitment, he has seized opportunities to the maximum and he is a great colleague and a great person. 

The ceremony was attended by around 250 people, including Frederico Pereira Coutinho and Rui Mayer, partners from the Lisbon office, and Victor Xercavins, from the Barcelona office, who presented an award to a general counsel. 

In previous years, the lawyers from our firm, Alberto Fortún, Andrew Ward, Antonio Baena, César Rivera, Diogo Perestrelo, Gerard Correig, Javier Carvajal, João Mattamouros Resende, Kai Christian Fischer, Mariana Norton dos Reis and Omar Puertas have received this distinction.
