Expert with over 30 years of experience leading Spanish and international arbitration and court proceedings; specializing in international arbitration, mainly concerning the construction, engineering and energy sectors, and litigation involving civil liability.
In the area of construction and engineering law, Alfonso Iglesia has represented Spanish and foreign companies in disputes relating to the implementation of projects in wide range of countries, including Spain, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Romania, Bulgaria, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. His advisory services range from the contract negotiation phase to defending clients in courts of justice and arbitration courts, including negotiation procedures, mediation, expert determination and disputes boards.
He has participated in ad hoc arbitrations, UNCITRAL arbitrations and arbitrations administered by the main international arbitration courts (e.g., ICC, CIADI, CPA) and Spanish arbitration courts (e.g., Court of Arbitration of Madrid, CIMA and TAB).
In the area of civil liability, he has participated in cases such as tobacco litigation (representing a multinational tobacco company in collective actions and actions for indemnity) and the lawsuits over the fire in the Windsor building in Madrid (representing the building owner), as well as defending technology companies in class action lawsuits.
He is president of the Spanish Arbitration Club and one of the two members for Spain of the Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Chartered institute of Arbitrators, the ICC Institute of World Business Law, and the International Bar Association, and secretary of the board of directors of the Spanish branch of the International Law Association.
He speaks regularly in specialized courses and at seminars. He has participated in several publications and collective works on arbitration and construction.
He also lectures in the Master in Business Law at Universidad Pontificia Comillas-ICADE in Madrid.
