SubscribeRafael Fontana, honorary chair of Cuatrecasas, has been awarded the Distinguished Cross, First Class, of the Order of Saint Raymond of Peñafort. The Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Parliamentary Relations, Félix Bolaños, presented him with the decoration at a ceremony held in the auditorium of Complutense University of Madrid.
The distinction was granted in July 2023 by the then Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, following a nomination by the Saint Raymond of Peñafort Association of Jurists and Legal Professionals. The honor recognizes Fontana’s distinguished career and contribution to the advancement of the legal sector.
Established in 1944, the Order of Saint Raymond of Peñafort is one of Spain’s foremost legal distinctions. It recognizes the achievements of professionals associated with the administration of justice, as well as their dedication to the study, advancement, and practice of law.
Over 40 years of professional career
Fontana has over 40 years of professional experience, during which he has held top leadership positions at Cuatrecasas and played a pivotal role in the firm’s development. He joined in 1983 as a tax lawyer and built his practice around family-owned business group planning, tax advisory services, and mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures involving domestic and international groups.
As chair, he drove the Cuatrecasas growth and international expansion, establishing it as a leading firm in the Iberian and Latin American markets. During his tenure, the firm strengthened its presence in Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru and expanded its European collaboration with leading law firms.
Throughout his career, Fontana has advised on and helped structure major business transactions in Spain and Portugal. He has also served on the boards of directors and advisory boards of numerous companies. In addition, he works with business and institutional forums and associations and serves on the boards of trustees of several foundations.
