Overview of the regulation of desalination facilities

In recent years, water desalination has been cited as a solution to combat water scarcity. The construction of plants that transform seawater into water for human consumption has been promoted in many jurisdictions. In this document, our Energy and Infrastructure experts in Spain, Portugal, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru present the legal regime in those jurisdictions on:

• water desalination activity,
• the construction requirements for desalination plants, and
• the principles governing the granting of concessions.
