On January 10, the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG) announced the Biomethane Action Plan 2024–2040 (“PAB”) with the goal of boosting the biomethane market as a sustainable alternative for reducing dependence on natural gas imports in the industrial and domestic sectors.

The PAB focuses on:

  • empowering strategic sectors to exploit the potential of biogas;
  • establishing a domestic market for biomethane;
  • strengthening national market growth as a fundamental part of decarbonization; and
  • attracting new green industries.

On January 25, the public consultation was launched to hear from all interested parties, and it will remain open until February 9, 2024. Contributions should be sent exclusively through the ConsultaLEX portal, using the response template available online.

The press release from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action highlights the government’s commitment to promoting the renewable gas value chain, including measures such as investment support for renewable gas production units through the Recovery and Resilience Plan, as well as incentives to create a consumer market through the auction for the centralized purchase of biomethane and green hydrogen. This positioning aims to consolidate the production and consumption of renewable gases as key elements in decarbonizing the economy and attracting new green industries.
