Carlos III of Madrid University wins national rounds of Jessup Moot Court Competition

February 22, 2021

A team of Carlos III of Madrid University students were declared the winners of the national rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, after defeating the team from Pompeu Fabra University in the final round. This is the 11th consecutive year that Cuatrecasas hosts this prestigious competition, held online for the first time from February 17 to 19.

The winning team will participate in the 62nd international round of the competition that will be held from March 13 to 18, and that will represent the largest online gathering of law students ever. The 10 participating teams were made up of the most outstanding law students from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Carlos III of Madrid University, ESADE–Ramón Llull University, ICADE-Comillas Pontifical University, IE University, Loyola University Andalusia, Pompeu Fabra University, University of Deusto, University of Murcia, and University of Girona.

Every year, the rounds of the competition address topical issues. In this edition, the topic particularly connects with reality as it concerns the J-VID-18 pandemic and the obligations and responses of States with regard to handling the health crisis. The case also poses other questions such as the jurisdiction of the Court, a claim for political asylum by a scientist, and State responsibility for a suspicious aircraft explosion.
