ESADE Business & Law School has won the Spanish edition of the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, after a hard-fought final with Universidad Carlos III of Madrid. Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira hosted the national rounds of this competition, from February 18 to 20, in the Barcelona office, for the fifth consecutive year.

The Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Madrid, Carlos III University of Madrid, ESADE Business & Law School, the University of Barcelona, and the University of Navarra participated in the Jessop Moot Court.

The teams of law students, helped by tutors and trainers, verbally competed in several qualifying rounds with a fictitious case of the International Court of Justice. This year, the case was about the right of a region to self-determination and its annexation to another, drawing on the real cases of Crimea and South Sudan.

A panel of over 30 experts formed by renowned jurists from the academic and professional world assessed the students’ performance. The skills the experts valued most were legal knowledge, ability to react and convince, time management and a good use of English.

Almudena Carneros, the competition’s national administrator and associate of Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, highlighted that “it is very satisfying to see that the level of our law students continues to improve yearly. Many of the students prepare for the competition for nearly a year and it is incredible how skillfully they argue complex subjects. It is also a great honor for the firm to host this competition, which is clearly synonymous with talent.”

This year the Jessup Moot Court Competition in Spain has had a special feature. The students have recorded their own experience in the competition with GoPro cameras.

Thanks to these cameras provided by Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, the students subjectively recorded their worries, motivations and opinions throughout the competition.

In this video you can see the best moments caught by the students and witness an international public law competition as it has never before been described.
