SubscribeRecently, the CNMC has published an impact assessment of its studies on the wholesale and retail distribution market for medicines in Spain (available here), in which it reaches a series of conclusions on the potential benefits that would derive from implementing its recommendations.
In relation to the wholesale sector, it is highlighted that the improvement of health technologies would lead to better access to innovative medicines for patients, as well as better management of public resources. It also points out that an increase in the market share of generic medicines could lead to annual savings in pharmaceutical expenditure for both the National Health System and patients.
On the other hand, in the retail sector, the CNMC estimates that, if the opening of pharmacies is made more flexible, following models such as that of the region of Navarre or the Nordic countries, 20,000 new pharmacies and 45,000 jobs could be created in a decade.
The report also identifies a potential reduction in drug prices if the sale of over-the-counter medicines in establishments other than pharmacies were liberalized.
Finally, the study points out that, if certain requirements for the granting of administrative authorizations for the opening of pharmacies and the obligation of pharmacists to be registered were eliminated, pharmacists could compete in better conditions.
