Rafael Sánchez Aristi is a chair professor of civil law at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos since 2018. He lectures in undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, as well as on other postgraduate and continuous training courses at various universities and educational institutions.
He advises on all areas of copyright law and other intellectual property rights. He regularly advises major users (radio and television bodies, cinemas and hotel chains) on their relations and negotiations of rates with the large-scale owners of intellectual property rights, both in relation to pre-litigation and litigation matters. He also handles transactions and contracts involving intellectual property, advising clients on business models based on software and databases and advising platforms that work intensively with online content. Rafael also provides services in areas overlapping with intellectual property, including unfair competition, personal rights (image, honor, the right to be forgotten) and the regime for information society services providers. He also has worked in the field of art law and historic-artistic heritage. From 2009 to 2014, he was head lawyer of the Studies and Reports Service of the General Council of the Spanish Judiciary and, from 2007 to 2009, he was a substitute senior judge at the Provincial Court of Guadalajara.
He is deputy director of the journal Pe. i. Revista de Propiedad Intelectual and a member of the Association of Civil Law Lecturers and of the Literary and Artistic Association for Defense of Authors’ Rights (ALADDA)—the Spanish group of the International Literary and Artistic Association (ALAI) of which he was chair from 2015 to 2019.
He speaks regularly at congresses, conferences and seminars, including those organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization, the European Institute of Public Administration, the European Judicial Training Network and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property.
