Gustavo Mata handles construction and energy disputes relating to projects in Latin America and Europe. In the construction sector, he represents multinationals when managing claims before, during and after arbitration. Examples of his work are projects to build public transport systems in Latin America, the overhauling of highways in Eastern Europe, the construction of multimodal bridges between European countries, and the construction and operation of hydroelectric plants in Central America.
In the energy sector, he advises on arbitration proceedings under bilateral and multilateral treaties protecting foreign investment. He has represented several oil companies regarding their claims with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes and the International Chamber of Commerce against Venezuela and its bodies, in the context of the nationalization of the hydrocarbons sector between 2006 and 2009.
Before joining Cuatrecasas, he was an associate at leading law firms in New York and in Caracas.
