Cuatrecasas strengthens its position in the Tax Practice area by bringing José Antonio Fernández-Gorostiaga on board as new Tax counsel in the Basque Country. His joining the firm means a strong and decisive step towards consolidating all areas of business law advising from the Bilbao, San Sebastián and Vitoria offices, reinforcing an excellent team of 65 lawyers and 12 partners distributed in the three territories.

José Antonio Fernández-Gorostiaga has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Business from Universidad de Deusto with a major in Business Management and almost 30 years of professional experience as tax advisor. He has been involved in advising and auditing projects with top-rated national and international institutions. He has spent the last few decades of his career at BBVA, where as head of the bank’s Tax Bex Holding department, he focused on developing holding tax processes and the bank’s technology transformation. In parallel, he teaches Financial Decisions and Taxation as associate lecturer at Universidad de Deusto.

His professional profile and personal qualities are ideal to add important value to one of the main practice areas of the firm. He will work from the Bilbao office with a team of over 40 highly qualified lawyers with in-depth knowledge of the local business environment, institutions and tax system. With regard to joining the firm, José Antonio Fernández-Gorostiaga remarks, “I am very excited about this extraordinary professional opportunity and very grateful for the trust placed in me from the start by a firm of this level.”

The Cuatrecasas single office in the Basque Country continues to grow steadily, covering the legal needs of clients throughout the territory and neighboring autonomous communities. The headquarters in Bilbao, San Sebastián and Vitoria operate together as the firm’s third office in Spain, after Madrid and Barcelona. Among the services it provides business, tax and labor advising, with broad experience in commercial and maritime litigation, corporate restructuring, insolvency processes and international trade stand out.

Joanes Labayen, managing director of the Basque Country office, points out that “José Antonio joining Cuatrecasas is another example of the firm’s commitment to offering sophisticated legal advice, with international experience and the ability to provide first-rate services in highly complex matters to our clients in the autonomous region.”
