US-UK arrangement on pharmaceutical trade and pricing
June 1, 2026

With the publication of the policy assumed by the President of the United States on May 12, 2025 (available here), on the application of the most-favored-nation principle in prescribing and pricing medicines to American patients, the United Kingdom and the United States have been concluding negotiations to reach an agreement on the pricing of pharmaceutical drugs.

In this regard, on April 2, 2026, the aforementioned agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom was published, in which both governments agree to work together to:

  • ensure that all countries contribute equitably to the cost of pharmaceutical innovation
  • strengthen the supply chains of both countries
  • improve the operating environment of pharmaceutical companies in the United Kingdom
  • accelerate the procurement of innovative medicines for patients; and,
  • to promote mutually beneficial trade to support employment and economic growth.

This is an agreement that can be expected to have a significant impact on the global and European pharmaceutical market, such as a potential carry-over effect on prices in those countries that use international comparison methods when setting the laboratory sale price or maximum intervened
